Breaking Rules and Scoring for the New Olympic Games Sport at Paris 2024

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris will feature a brand new sport that is sure to captivate audiences around the world – breaking. Breaking, also known as break dancing, is not your typical Olympic event, but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) is looking to attract a younger audience with this fresh addition.

Originating in the Bronx in the 1970s, breaking is a dance style with strong urban roots characterized by acrobatic movements and stylized footwork. Since the 1990s, break dance competitions have been held, leading to the creation of the World DanceSport Federation.

Breaking made its first Olympic appearance at the Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires in 2018 and was deemed a success by organizers. Now, it is set to feature as a new sport at the Paris 2024 Games.

In Paris, breaking will have two medal events – one for men and one for women, with 16 ‘b-boys’ and ‘b-girls’ competing. A maximum of four athletes per continent will be allowed to compete in each event.

Judges will score solo battles based on criteria such as creativity, personality, technique, variety, performativity, and musicality. The competitor with the most points after each round will be declared the winner.

Breaking is the only sport set to debut in Paris, following the introduction of karate, surfing, skateboarding, and sport climbing at the Tokyo Games. With its unique blend of athleticism and artistry, breaking is sure to be a highlight of the 2024 Olympic Games.
