WNBA stars Breanna Stewart and Napheesa Collier are making waves in the world of women’s basketball with the announcement of their new league, Unrivaled. The league, set to debut in January 2025 in Miami, will feature 30 of the best players in the sport, offering them six-figure salaries and equity in the league.
During an appearance on “Good Morning America,” Stewart shared that the average salary in Unrivaled will be the highest of any women’s basketball league globally. The league will run from January through March, filling the gap in the typical women’s basketball player’s schedule when they are not playing in the WNBA or overseas.
The games in Unrivaled will be played in full-court 3-on-3 and 1-on-1 formats on a smaller court than the WNBA, promising a more fast-paced and entertaining experience for fans. While the names of the players have not been revealed, Stewart hinted that some have participated in WNBA All-Star Games.
Funding for the league has already been secured, with high-profile investors such as Alex Morgan, Megan Rapinoe, Carmelo Anthony, and Ashton Kutcher backing the project. Stewart, a Puma athlete, and Collier, a Nike athlete, were former college teammates at UConn and currently play in the WNBA for the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx, respectively.
The announcement of Unrivaled has sparked excitement in the basketball community, with fans eagerly anticipating the debut of the new league and the opportunity to see the best players in the sport compete in a fresh and innovative format.
