Brenner’s standout performance propels Mooney to victory over Columbiana | Latest News, Sports, and Job Updates

Reading Time: < 1 minute

In a thrilling pitchers’ duel at Bob Cene Park on Tuesday, Cardinal Mooney’s Johnny Brenner outdueled Columbiana’s Devin Daugherty in a 2-0 victory for the Cardinals. Brenner threw a dominant complete-game shutout, allowing just one hit and striking out a total of 12 batters.

Despite Brenner’s stellar performance on the mound, the Cardinals struggled offensively, with Daugherty holding them to just four hits and one earned run over six innings. Mooney managed to score their first run on a balk by Daugherty with the bases loaded, and added another run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly by Taco Verroco.

After the game, Mooney head coach Eddie Reese praised Brenner for his outstanding performance, stating that he gave the team a chance to win with his pitching. Columbiana head coach Bryce Franken also commended Daugherty for battling through adversity and keeping the game close.

The game got off to a late start due to a previous matchup between Waterloo and Lowellville, but once it began, both pitchers wasted no time on the mound. The first inning took just nine minutes, setting the pace for a quick and intense matchup.

With the win, Cardinal Mooney improved to 4-5 on the season, while Columbiana fell to 5-4. Mooney is set to play again at Cene Park today against South Range, while Columbiana will face Southern at Firestone Park.

Overall, it was a memorable game for both teams, highlighted by Brenner’s pitching gem and the Cardinals’ ability to capitalize on key scoring opportunities.
