Brief World News: Observance of Menstrual Hygiene Day, Guterres Condemns DPRK Missile Launch, Conflict Erupts in Sudan

Reading Time: < 1 minute

A recent report has shed light on the lack of menstrual health education and resources in schools worldwide, with only two out of five schools providing menstrual health education and less than one in three schools having menstrual waste bins in girls’ bathrooms. Additionally, 427 million children do not have access to single-sex and usable sanitation services at school, and one in five schools lack sanitation services altogether.

UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, actress Millie Bobby Brown, expressed her dream of a world where periods do not hold girls back in a video statement. She emphasized the unbearable silence surrounding periods for millions of girls, especially in times of war or natural disasters where access to menstrual products and support is limited.

On World Menstrual Hygiene Day, UN Women is raising awareness of period poverty, which is defined as the inability to afford and access menstrual products, sanitation facilities, and education to manage menstrual health. This issue can have detrimental effects on girls’ education and health, leading to missed school days and dangerous consequences for those who experience sexual abuse or early marriage due to their periods.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned North Korea’s attempted launch of a military satellite using ballistic missile technology, calling on the country to adhere to relevant Security Council resolutions and resume conversations for sustainable peace and denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

In Sudan, ongoing clashes in El Fasher, North Darfur, have created a dire humanitarian situation, leaving parts of the city without basic necessities like electricity, water, food, and healthcare services. The International Organization for Migration reports that about 58,000 people have been displaced since April 1, urging parties involved in the conflict to respect international humanitarian law and allow safe passage for civilians and aid.
