Brief World News: Security Council Condemns Attacks in DR Congo, Breakthrough in Cholera Testing, Launch of ‘My Health, My Right’ Campaign

The United Nations Security Council has issued a strong condemnation of armed groups operating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, particularly the M23 rebel group. In a statement following a briefing by the head of the UN mission, MONUSCO, ambassadors called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and demanded an end to any further advances by the M23.

The Council expressed concern over the ongoing displacement of civilians in Ituri, North Kivu, and South Kivu, urging all donors to increase support in response to the 2024 humanitarian response plan. They also called on all parties, including the M23 and Congolese armed groups, to provide safe and unhindered humanitarian access to those in need and to stop attacks against civilians.

Furthermore, the Council condemned foreign military support provided to the M23 and other armed groups, demanding that such assistance cease and foreign fighters withdraw from the region. They also expressed deep concern over reports of foreign military support for the M23, including alleged involvement of the Russia-based Wagner Group.

In a separate global health initiative, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced a massive deployment of over 1.2 million rapid diagnostic tests for cholera to 14 countries. This initiative, coordinated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, aims to improve the detection of cholera, monitor outbreaks, and assess the effectiveness of vaccination campaigns in high-risk countries.

As World Health Day approaches, WHO is launching the ‘My health, my right’ campaign to advocate for universal access to quality health services and other essential rights. The campaign highlights the importance of addressing political inaction, lack of accountability, and discrimination in ensuring the right to health for all individuals, especially those facing marginalization or vulnerability.
