Britain reports significant decrease in student dependents following visa crackdown | Global News

The UK government has reported a significant decrease in the number of dependents accompanying overseas students following the implementation of new visa rules earlier this year. According to the Home Office, there has been a nearly 80% drop in dependents from January to March compared to the same period in 2023, coinciding with over 26,000 fewer student visa applications.

Indians have been the leading recipients of international student visas in recent years, but the new regulations are expected to deter Indian students from choosing UK universities. Under the updated rules, most international students, except those on research courses, are no longer allowed to bring family members with them. Additionally, students can no longer switch their visa before completing their course, as the government aims to prevent misuse of student visas for work purposes.

UK Home Secretary James Cleverly emphasized the need for these measures to address concerns about unsustainable levels of migration, public service strain, and wage suppression. The government’s crackdown on immigration is part of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s plan to reduce migration numbers, with more changes expected in the future.

The tightening of visa norms is also expected to impact the post-study Graduate Route, which allows international students to work in the UK for up to two years after completing their degree. Experts predict that these restrictions may lead to a decline in Indian students applying to UK universities, as the government aims to curb exploitation and abuse within the social care sector.

Overall, the government’s visa crackdowns are projected to prevent approximately 300,000 people from entering the UK, aligning with their goal of reducing both legal and illegal migration. These developments come amidst preparations for a general election later this year and controversial deportation schemes for failed asylum seekers.
