Mumbai Hosts British Boarding School Fair, Attracting Parents and Students Seeking Holistic Development

Mumbai recently played host to the British Boarding School Fair, drawing in parents and students eager to explore educational opportunities abroad. Among the attendees was Mrunalini Singh, a working professional from Dubai, who flew in specifically to find a suitable boarding school for her son entering grade 9.

Singh expressed her interest in schools that prioritize sports alongside academics, reflecting a growing trend among parents seeking a more holistic development for their children. The fair featured admissions heads from 14 prestigious British boarding schools, including Sevenoaks School, Millfield School, and Haileybury School, offering a glimpse into the international standards and cultural diversity these institutions provide.

With approximately 500 boarding schools across the UK enrolling nearly 2,000 Indian students in 2023, the fair aimed to guide parents and students on curriculum choices, extracurricular activities, and pastoral care systems offered by British boarding schools. Organized by The Red Pen, an independent education consultancy, the event facilitated interactions between attendees and admission directors from top schools.

Alex Patton, deputy headmaster of Brighton College, highlighted India’s significance as a major market for UK boarding schools, noting the surge in Indian student enrollment. He emphasized the academic prowess and enthusiasm for education displayed by Indian students, driving the popularity of British boarding schools.

Laura Bursey Faulkner, director of admissions at Rugby School, pointed out the school’s diverse co-curricular offerings, catering to students’ varied interests and talents. Anuj Arenja, an alumnus of Sevenoaks School, shared his positive experience and decision to send his daughters to a British boarding school, citing the comprehensive educational experience provided.
