Broncos are reportedly not picking up QB Zach Wilson’s 5th-year option

The Denver Broncos have made a bold decision regarding quarterback Zach Wilson, opting to decline the fifth-year option on his rookie contract, as reported by Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette. This move means that Wilson will become a free agent next offseason instead of being guaranteed $22.408 million in 2025.

Wilson’s tenure with the New York Jets, who selected him second overall in the 2021 draft, has been tumultuous. He struggled on the field, leading to multiple benchings in his first two seasons. The Jets eventually traded for Aaron Rodgers in 2023, only for Wilson to replace Rodgers after he suffered a season-ending injury.

In 2023, Wilson threw eight touchdowns and seven interceptions in 12 games, with the Jets winning just four of the 11 games he started. His career stats in New York include a 57% completion rate, 6.3 yards per attempt, and 23 touchdowns to 25 interceptions.

The Broncos acquired Wilson from the Jets last week for minimal risk, adding him to a quarterback room led by Jarrett Stidham. They also drafted Oregon quarterback Bo Nix in the first round of this year’s draft. It remains to be seen if Nix will be ready to start immediately, giving Wilson a potential opportunity to showcase his skills and boost his value before hitting free agency.
