Brooks Johnson’s competitive spirit leads Bemidji’s boys tennis team

BEMIDJI – Brooks Johnson, a junior at Bemidji High School, received a pleasant surprise on Friday night after winning his No. 3 singles match in straight sets. Johnson was named one of the team’s four captains, joining Jack McNallan, JD Hasbargen, and Leo Mathews. Known for his love of competition and positive attitude, Johnson’s leadership qualities were evident to the team’s head coach, Kyle Fodness.

Fodness praised Johnson for his competitive spirit and versatility on the court, noting that Johnson excels in both singles and doubles matches. Johnson’s passion for competition extends beyond tennis, as he previously competed with Bemidji’s esports team, earning a trip to state in Rocket League.

Despite his success in esports, Johnson remains focused on tennis and his goal of playing No. 1 singles. He values the mental aspect of the game and sees parallels between tennis and esports in terms of mental strength and competitiveness.
