Bruton High School made history on Thursday by securing their first-ever boys tennis team state championship. The Panthers defeated Radford 5-2 in a thrilling Class 2 title match that included a rain delay at Liberty University.
After being the runner-up for the past two seasons, Bruton finally clinched the championship by moving ahead 4-0 before the rain arrived. Freshman standout Christoph Schweitzer led the team with a victory at No. 1, while Max de Winter, Talien Barnes, and Nick Felsman also secured wins in their respective matches. The Panthers also managed to secure the one doubles triumph they needed to lift the trophy.
In other matches, Cox and Grafton boys, as well as the Great Bridge girls, faced tough opponents and unfortunately fell short in their championship matches. Riverside Rams shut out the Cox boys 6-0 in Class 5, while Douglas Freeman girls claimed their fourth consecutive Class 5 trophy with a 5-2 victory over Great Bridge.
Overall, it was a day filled with intense competition and remarkable performances on the tennis courts. Congratulations to Bruton High School for their historic achievement and to all the teams who competed with great determination and sportsmanship.
