Business aviation leaders remain optimistic about achieving net-zero goals

Industry leaders in the aviation sector are ramping up their environmental commitments, with a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. At a recent event ahead of the EBACE show, manufacturer chief executives and trade association heads pushed back against politicians looking to restrict private air travel in the name of climate change.

European Business Aviation Association (EBAA) secretary general Holger Krahmer emphasized the importance of freedom of movement and criticized the European Union for creating a “business unfriendly environment” with restrictions and bans. He and National Business Aviation Association counterpart Ed Bolen highlighted the role of technological advancements and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in reaching the industry’s ambitious emissions goals.

SAF is seen as a key tool in decarbonizing aviation, with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by 80% compared to traditional fuel. However, challenges remain, including the high cost and limited availability of SAF. To address this, the industry is exploring carbon-offset systems like book and claim, allowing companies to pay for SAF use elsewhere.

Innovation is also driving progress, with companies investing in experimental technologies like electric and hydrogen propulsion. Textron Aviation chief executive Ron Draper noted that modern aircraft emit 40% less carbon than previous models, showcasing the industry’s commitment to sustainability.

While some are skeptical about the immediate impact of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft on emissions, others like Lilium chief executive Klaus Roewe see potential in these technologies for the future. The aviation industry is clearly focused on advancing sustainable practices and reducing its environmental footprint, with a shared goal of creating a greener future for air travel.
