Tourists are flocking to Chautauqua County to witness the upcoming solar eclipse, but they are facing steep prices for accommodations. Several hotels in the area have limited availability and have hiked up their prices for the eclipse weekend.
The DoubleTree on Fourth St. is offering rooms at $233 a night or $733 for the weekend, while the Clarion Pointe Jamestown – Falconer is charging $316 a night. The Spencer Hotel & Spa Chautauqua is the most expensive option at $372 a night or $1,216 for the weekend. Prices may vary, and all stays are refundable with two adult occupancies.
Local businesses are also gearing up for the influx of visitors. The Chautauqua County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging restaurants and stores to stay open during the eclipse weekend to accommodate the crowds. Responses from food establishments vary, with some planning to offer special eclipse-themed items and extended hours.
Boat yards, marinas, and campgrounds are also preparing for the event. Holiday Harbor Marina-Celoron will have its full rental fleet ready and will open its restaurant earlier than usual. KOA Chautauqua Lake KOA Holiday resort and Jellystone Park Chautauqua County are offering camping accommodations at varying rates.
Local officials are urging residents to stock up on essential items ahead of the eclipse and have emergency response assets staged countywide. YMCA Camp Onyahsa is offering eclipse viewing packages, while the Boys and Girls Club of Jamestown will be open for children during school closures.
The Martz-Kohl Observatory will not be open to the public, but members can use the facilities. Experienced amateur astronomer Tom Traub expects a large turnout for the eclipse, based on the 900 people who viewed the 2017 eclipse from the observatory.
