Businesses in Nagaland start shutting down in protest against extortion | India News

An indefinite shutdown of business establishments began in Nagaland on Saturday in protest against extortion by underground groups, with markets closed and private offices shuttered. The shutdown was first observed in the state’s commercial capital Dimapur on Friday, with other districts joining in response to a call from the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce & Industries (CNCCI).

The CNCCI stated that harassment of the business community over extortion cannot be tolerated any longer and urged the government to take immediate action to stop the “unabated” extortions, intimidations, and summons by underground groups. Banks, educational institutions, government offices, and hospitals were exempt from the shutdown.

State Home Commissioner Vikeyie Kenya highlighted the rampant collection of taxes from businesses, particularly in Dimapur, by various groups that have signed ceasefire agreements with the government, creating an unbearable situation. He instructed the police to take stringent measures and report any ceasefire violations to the Ceasefire Monitoring Group for appropriate action.

The Dimapur police commissioner was directed to increase patrolling in market areas and deploy personnel to instill confidence among the people. A special cell was also formed by the police commissioner to exclusively handle incidents of extortion.

The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries expressed skepticism about the government’s sincerity in addressing the issue and stated that the shutdown would continue until satisfactory steps were taken. The business community in Nagaland is determined to stand against extortion and demand a safer environment for conducting business activities.
