Butte advocates for creation of business improvement district

A new push for establishing a business improvement district in Uptown Butte is gaining momentum, with advocates planning a series of meetings and outreach efforts to garner support from property owners. The effort, backed by $50,000 in grants and contributions, aims to enhance the central business district of Uptown Butte by funding maintenance, security, promotions, landscaping, and other improvements.

Shanna Adams, co-owner of the Hotel Finlen and a district advocate, outlined the plan to commissioners, emphasizing the potential benefits of drawing more visitors and patrons to Uptown Butte. The proposed district would cover approximately 30 blocks and require support from owners of more than 60% of the property area to be established.

If approved, property owners would pay an annual assessment to fund improvements in the district, with a board of business owners overseeing spending decisions. The current proposal includes a flat fee, as well as percentages based on square footage and taxable value, generating an estimated $200,000 to $215,000 annually.

The push for a business improvement district is part of the Uptown Master Plan adopted in 2022, with organizers aiming to address past concerns and unite business owners behind a common vision for Uptown Butte. Public gatherings will be held next week to discuss the benefits of a BID and address any questions or concerns from the community.
