Cal Poly Women’s Tennis Team Clinches Big West Championship in Dramatic Fashion

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In a nail-biting finish that had fans on the edge of their seats, the Cal Poly women’s tennis team secured their second Big West Championship in program history with a thrilling 4-3 victory over Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.

The championship match came down to the wire, with the score tied at 3-3 and all eyes on the No. 5 singles match featuring graduate student Melissa LaMette. After dropping the first set and facing a 5-2 deficit in the second set, LaMette staged a remarkable comeback to claim a 2-6, 7-6 (7-1), 6-4 victory, propelling the Mustangs to victory.

The win not only secured the conference title for Cal Poly but also earned them a spot in the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011. LaMette’s heroics in the singles match were crucial in avenging a regular-season loss to Cal State Fullerton and clinching the championship for the Mustangs.

The team’s strong performance in doubles play, highlighted by victories at No. 1 and No. 2, set the tone for the match. Delanie Dunkle and Peyton Dunkle’s dominant win at No. 1 helped the Mustangs secure the doubles point, while LaMette and Mosse clinched the point with a victory at No. 2.

Despite a valiant effort from the Titans in singles play, the Mustangs were able to maintain their lead with key wins from Mosse and Peyton. The match ultimately came down to LaMette, who once again delivered the decisive point for Cal Poly.

With the championship secured, the Mustangs now await their first-round opponent in the NCAA Tournament, with the selection show set to air on NCAA.com on Monday at 3:30 p.m. The team’s remarkable journey to the conference title will surely be remembered as a storybook ending to a memorable season.
