Wendy Downes, a 62-year-old runner, is gearing up to make history this weekend as she participates in her 50th marathon at the 60th anniversary of the Calgary Marathon. Known for her vibrant spirit and love for running, Wendy has been a familiar face on Calgary’s pathways for years.

Her marathon journey began in 1995 in Honolulu, where she braved scorching temperatures of 95 degrees. This initial race ignited a passion for running that has taken her around the globe, with some of her favorite marathons being in London and San Francisco. Wendy is also known for adding a signature cartwheel to many of her runs, showcasing her unique flair and enthusiasm.

As she prepares for her milestone 50th marathon, Wendy sees it not only as a personal achievement but also as a testament to the love and support she has received from the running community over the past three decades. When asked about what she is most looking forward to at the Calgary Marathon, Wendy expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of her friends and fellow runners who will be cheering her on.

Longtime friend and running partner Tagyn Carsolio commended Wendy’s strength and determination, highlighting her resilience and refusal to give up. “I don’t know anyone else who has run 50 marathons. Wendy is proving just how strong and tough she is. She just won’t quit,” Tagyn said.

Wendy’s 50th marathon is not just a personal milestone but a celebration of her enduring passion for running and the camaraderie she has found within the running community.
