The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken a significant step towards understanding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on market competition by announcing the commissioning of a study titled ‘Artificial Intelligence and Competition.’ This study aims to delve into the various dimensions of AI and its implications on competitive dynamics across different sectors.

The CCI has invited proposals from qualified agencies or institutions to conduct this research, which will explore both the positive impacts and potential competitive risks associated with AI deployment. The study will focus on how AI influences consumer choices through personalised recommendations, services, and pricing, as well as its role in shaping market behaviours and the implications of mergers and acquisitions involving AI-centric firms.

Key areas of focus for the study include investigating the use of AI in executing anti-competitive strategies, algorithmic biases, collusion driven by self-learning algorithms, market entry and exit barriers, concentration, innovation incentives, and overall market power. The findings of this study will help the CCI identify enforcement and advocacy priorities concerning AI’s application in the marketplace.

In an interview with PTI, CCI Chairperson Ravneet Kaur highlighted the potential efficiencies and innovations that AI and machine learning can bring, while also acknowledging the challenges related to market concentration and potential anti-competitive behaviors. The deadline for proposal submissions is June 3, with technical presentations scheduled for June 28 before the final financial bid deadline. This study is expected to provide valuable insights into the evolving landscape of AI and its impact on market competition.
