Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) has unveiled its new permanent Airport Overlook, a 600,000-square-foot observation area that is sure to delight AvGeeks and fans of airport observation areas. Located about 3 miles from the main terminal area, the overlook offers stunning views of the airfield, skyline, and terminal.

While CLT has had four previous overlooks dating back to 1937, the new Airport Overlook boasts modern amenities and features that set it apart. LED lighting, ample parking for cars and buses, a food truck staging area, pet relief areas, restrooms with baby changing stations, bicycle racks, picnic tables, shaded areas, and two age-specific aviation-themed playgrounds are just some of the highlights.

Visitors can also learn about the history of flight and the airport through information panels detailing the types of planes that fly in and out of CLT, how runways are built and named, and a short history of the airport. Additionally, a retired U.S. military fighter jet and a memorial dedicated to US Airways Flight 1016 are on display.

Jack Christine, CLT’s chief infrastructure officer, emphasized the importance of creating a space that people of all ages can enjoy. The Airport Overlook aims to educate, inspire, and create lasting memories for visitors.

The new Airport Overlook is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., and admission is free. So, whether you’re a plane enthusiast, history buff, or just looking for a unique experience, a trip to Charlotte’s Airport Overlook is definitely worth considering.
