Camila Giorgi Retires from Tennis in Light of Italian Tax Investigation

Camila Giorgi, a former top-ranked Italian tennis player, has announced her retirement from the sport amidst an ongoing investigation into tax evasion allegations. Giorgi, who has won four WTA singles titles and reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2018, made the announcement on her Instagram story, thanking her fans for their support over the years.

Italian authorities, including the Guardia di Finanza, are reportedly investigating Giorgi and her family for alleged tax evasion. A letter obtained by Corriere Della Sera revealed that Italy’s revenue collection agency has requested a seizure of over $500,000 owed to Giorgi by the Italian Tennis Federation.

Giorgi’s lawyers have stated that she plans to return to Italy soon and cooperate with the authorities to address the allegations. The 32-year-old athlete, who was ranked No. 116 in the WTA Tour singles rankings, filed her retirement paperwork with the International Tennis Integrity Agency.

Giorgi’s retirement comes after a challenging season where she struggled on the court, ending her career with a loss to world No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the Miami Open in March. Despite the controversy surrounding her retirement, Giorgi leaves behind a successful career with numerous accomplishments and over $6.4 million in prize money earned throughout her time in professional tennis.
