Canada urges its citizens to be cautious during elections in India | Global News

Canada has issued an updated travel advisory for its citizens traveling to India, warning them to be cautious due to potential demonstrations related to the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. The advisory, which was updated on Wednesday, advises Canadians to exercise a high degree of caution while in India.

The newly added section specifically mentions the general elections scheduled to take place between April 19 and June 1, 2024, stating that demonstrations could occur before, during, and after the elections. It also warns of possible disruptions to traffic and public transportation, as well as the imposition of curfews without notice.

The advisory advises travelers to avoid areas where demonstrations and large gatherings are taking place. It also retains previous warnings issued last year after strained relations between Canada and India following comments made by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau regarding potential links between Indian agents and a pro-Khalistan figure’s killing.

In addition to the cautionary advice for Delhi and the National Capital Region, the advisory also calls for a high degree of caution in and around Bengaluru, Chandigarh, and Mumbai, where consular services in-person are temporarily unavailable.

The updated advisory comes after 41 Canadian diplomats were pulled from India in October following a diplomatic dispute with New Delhi. Canada described the move as a “mass expulsion,” while India argued it was seeking parity in the numbers of diplomats.

Travelers are urged to stay informed and exercise caution while in India during the upcoming elections to ensure their safety and security.
