Canada’s provincial trade representative regains diplomatic immunity in India

India has restored diplomatic immunity for the trade representative of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan, marking a significant development in the bilateral relations between the two countries.

This decision comes after a period of strained relations, which saw 41 Canadian diplomats leaving India last October due to the threat of losing their diplomatic immunity. Canada had described this as a “mass expulsion” of its diplomats, while India maintained that it was seeking “parity” in the numbers of diplomats.

The managing director of the Saskatchewan India office, who was among those who left India in October, will now return with diplomatic immunity. However, it has been clarified that this individual will not be considered an accredited Canadian diplomat.

This move is seen as a positive step towards strengthening the relationship between Saskatchewan and India, with the Saskatchewan government expressing gratitude for the restoration of diplomatic accreditation. Saskatchewan is a key player in Canada’s trade relations with India, accounting for a significant portion of Canadian exports to the country.

The province’s top exports to India include lentils, potash, wood pulp, peas, and non-durum wheat, making it a crucial partner in India’s import market. The decision to restore diplomatic immunity for the Saskatchewan trade representative is expected to further enhance trade ties between the two nations.
