Canadian Minister Marc Miller responded to External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s criticism of Ottawa’s immigration policies, stating that while Jaishankar is entitled to his opinion, it is not accurate. The dispute arose after three Indian nationals allegedly linked to the killing of pro-Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar were arrested in Canada.

Jaishankar had accused Canada of welcoming individuals with organized crime links from Punjab, despite India’s warnings about their criminal backgrounds. In response, Miller defended Canada’s immigration process, emphasizing that criminal record checks are conducted on individuals entering the country on student visas.

The tension between the two countries escalated as Jaishankar revealed that India had sought the extradition of 25 individuals, mostly pro-Khalistani members, but Canada did not comply. The recent charges laid against three Indian nationals for the murder of Nijjar further fueled the controversy, with reports indicating that they had entered Canada on student visas.

Jaishankar criticized the Trudeau government for allegedly allowing extremism and separatism under the guise of free speech, accusing Canadian authorities of using the Nijjar issue for internal politics. Miller, on the other hand, refused to disclose details of the police investigation, directing inquiries to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
