Republican California Assemblymember Vince Fong emerged victorious in a special election on Tuesday, securing the seat previously held by former speaker Kevin McCarthy with the backing of former president Donald Trump.

Mr. Fong, who is a close ally of Mr. McCarthy, defeated Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux to serve the remainder of the former speaker’s term in the House until early January. In his victory statement, Mr. Fong outlined his priorities, which include focusing on border security, supporting small businesses, and investing in water storage crucial for agriculture in the region.

The election, which saw low turnout, highlighted the enduring influence of Mr. Trump within the Republican Party. With Mr. Fong’s win, Republicans will now hold 12 out of California’s 52 seats in the US House, increasing their majority to 218 compared to the Democrats’ 213.

Despite his victory, Mr. Fong will face another challenge in November when he goes head-to-head with Mr. Boudreaux once again for a full term in the House. Both candidates, who are staunch Trump supporters and conservative Republicans, have emphasized their commitment to addressing issues such as crime, border security, and water and energy needs for farmers.

Mr. McCarthy played a significant role in supporting Mr. Fong’s campaign, directing substantial funds to aid his bid for the seat. The outcome of the special election sets the stage for a competitive rematch between Mr. Fong and Mr. Boudreaux in the upcoming general election, shaping the future of representation in California’s congressional delegation.
