Reading Time: < 1 minute

Tourism Western Australia MD Carolyn Turnbull is bidding farewell to the agency after three years of remarkable achievements. Turnbull’s departure comes as she embarks on a new leadership opportunity in the tourism and hospitality industry, set to commence on June 1.

During her tenure, Turnbull played a pivotal role in driving growth and success for Tourism WA. One of her most notable accomplishments was the record-breaking $17.7 billion in visitor spend, surpassing pre-COVID levels by an impressive 31 percent.

Under Turnbull’s leadership, Tourism WA saw significant milestones, including the launch of the global tourism brand ‘Walking On A Dream’ and the implementation of the WA Visitor Economy Strategy 2033. She also secured a record number of high-profile events, such as Coldplay, Rugby Sevens, and WWE.

Additionally, Turnbull facilitated the resumption and launch of nonstop flights between Perth and 19 international destinations, solidifying WA’s reputation as the Western Gateway to Australia.

Stepping into the role of Acting Managing Director is Stephanie Underwood, who has been with the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation since 2021. Underwood, appointed as Tourism WA’s Executive Director of Strategy and Engagement in January 2023, will begin her duties on May 13.

As Turnbull bids farewell, Tourism WA Chair Di Bain commended her leadership and contributions to the agency’s growth. An extensive recruitment process will now be initiated to appoint a new Managing Director for Tourism WA.
