Cathedral boys and SEU girls take the lead in the first leg of Tomahawk tournament

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The New Ulm Cathedral Greyhounds boys golf team dominated the opening leg of the Tomahawk Conference Golf Tournament on Monday at the New Ulm Country Club, finishing with a comfortable 24-stroke lead over Minnesota Valley Lutheran. Led by junior Will Marti, who shot a 79 to claim the medalist title, the Greyhounds showcased their skills on their home course.

Marti attributed his success to his short game and familiarity with the course, stating, “The putts were falling, which was huge. Short game has been on point. And just getting it to the green, really, has been the big thing.” The advantage of playing on their home course was evident as the Greyhounds excelled in the challenging conditions.

Senior Joey Fingland also had a strong performance, shooting an 84 to finish fourth. Fingland emphasized the importance of settling in and playing their game, noting that their familiarity with the course gave them an edge over the competition.

On the girls side, Sleepy Eye United took the early lead with a team score of 429, narrowly edging out Minnesota Valley Lutheran. SEU sophomore Sam Price, last year’s individual champion, finished second with a solid 95. MVL freshman Jorga Brown impressed with a 94, showcasing her skills on the challenging course.

As the tournament moves to Oakdale Golf Club for Leg 2, all the golfers are gearing up for another challenging round. With the competition heating up, every stroke will count as they aim to secure a lead heading into the final leg of the tournament. Stay tuned for more updates as the Tomahawk Conference Golf Tournament unfolds.
