CBS Show Date Announced for 2024 American Music Awards

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The American Music Awards, a long-standing tradition on ABC, is making a big move to CBS for its upcoming show on Sunday, Oct. 6. The announcement was made by CBS and Dick Clark Productions, the producers of the 2024 AMAs. The show will be live on both coasts at 8:00 p.m. ET and 5:00 p.m. PT, and will also be available for streaming on Paramount+.

This shift marks the third major awards show that CBS has acquired in recent years, following the CMT Music Awards and the Golden Globes. With the AMAs leaving ABC, the Oscars now hold the title of ABC’s longest-running awards show.

The AMAs were created as a fan-based alternative to the Grammys and have grown significantly over the years. The first show in 1974 was just 90 minutes long, but now spans three hours and recognizes a wide range of genres, including hip-hop, Latin, inspirational, gospel, Afrobeats, and K-pop.

Despite the evolution of the show, the vision set forth by Dick Clark 50 years ago still guides the AMAs. The show aims to honor artists based on fan interactions and popular vote, giving the music-buying public a voice in the industry.

The first AMAs in 1974 featured hosts Helen Reddy, Smokey Robinson, and Roger Miller, each representing a different genre. Dick Clark, a legendary figure in both music and television, was the executive producer of the inaugural show. His vision for the AMAs has endured over the years, making it a staple in the music industry.
