CCI to assess the impact of AI on markets – Technology News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has taken a significant step towards understanding the impact of emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) on the goods and services markets. The regulator has initiated a market study on “artificial intelligence and competition in India” to delve into the competition-related aspects within AI ecosystems.

The study will focus on generative AI and the potential impact of AI on efficiency and innovation in key industries. The proposal aims to address concerns regarding potential competition risks arising from the use of AI. It will gather data from various stakeholders including technology firms, start-ups, independent developers, AI development platforms, innovators, investors, and industry associations.

Experts have lauded the CCI’s proactive approach in conducting this study, noting the importance of understanding new issues and markets that may emerge from the growing application of AI in digital markets. The study comes at a crucial time when many new technologies are still in their early stages of development.

The deadline for submitting bids for the study is June 3, with financial bids set to be opened on June 28. The proposed methodology includes collating existing research, conducting surveys and interviews with key stakeholders, and analyzing the gathered information. The CCI aims to strengthen its capabilities in the technology sector through initiatives like the in-house digital markets and data unit and the draft Digital Competition Bill 2024.

Overall, the market study on AI and competition in India signifies the CCI’s commitment to fostering innovation and fair competition in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
