Cedar Falls’ Smalley and Columbus’ Stroh Shine in State Tennis

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Cedar Falls sophomore Ben Smalley has secured a spot in the Class 2A state tennis tournament after an impressive performance at the district meet in Mason City High School. Despite a tough loss in the finals to seventh-ranked Micah Flaherty of Fort Dodge, Smalley’s journey to the state championships at the University of Iowa Hawkeye Recreation Center in Iowa City is a testament to his hard work and dedication to the sport.

Coach Brian Suiter praised Smalley’s work ethic and passion for tennis, noting that he has elevated his game to a high level. Smalley’s path to the state tournament included victories over tough opponents like Brendan Fitzhugh of Dallas Center Grimes and Akramjon Abdurakhimov of Fort Dodge.

After stepping into the No. 1 spot in the Tigers lineup earlier in the season, Smalley has proven himself as a formidable competitor. A standout win over a City High opponent boosted his confidence and set the tone for the rest of his successful season.

In other tennis news, Columbus Catholic freshman Parker Stroh advanced to the 1A state tournament with a runner-up finish at Byrnes Park in Waterloo. Despite falling short in the finals to Grundy Center’s Tanner Laube, Stroh’s journey to the state championships is a remarkable achievement for the young player.

With the state tournaments fast approaching, tennis fans can look forward to watching these talented athletes compete at the highest level.
