Cedar Rapids schools seek inspiration from Waterloo for college and career model

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Cedar Rapids Community School District is taking inspiration from the success of the Waterloo Career Center to implement similar programs in their own schools. The Waterloo Career Center, which opened in 2016, has been instrumental in helping students explore their passions, gain real-life experience, and save money by earning college credits while in high school.

The Cedar Rapids district plans to launch freshman programs at three high schools for the 2025-26 school year, with plans to extend the programs to sophomores, juniors, and seniors the following year. Renovations are underway at the schools to accommodate the new programs.

In a recent survey conducted by the Cedar Rapids district, the community expressed interest in expanding career paths in construction trades, health sciences, computer and data sciences, automotive services, metals fabrication and welding, and agriculture, food sciences, and natural resources.

The goal is to integrate college and career learning into the high schools themselves, providing students with the opportunity to explore various career paths and gain valuable skills early on. The district aims to identify themes for the academies by June 3, with a focus on preparing students for high-wage, high-skill, and in-demand careers.

The success of the Waterloo Career Center serves as a model for the Cedar Rapids district, showcasing the benefits of hands-on learning, industry certifications, and real-world experience in preparing students for their future careers. With the support of the community and school officials, the Cedar Rapids district is on track to provide students with innovative and engaging educational opportunities.
