Cedar Rapids Xavier Girls’ Tennis Team Aims for State Title Without Focus on Redemption

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The Cedar Rapids Xavier girls’ tennis team is gearing up for the Class 1A postseason with a perfect 14-0 dual record. After a disappointing loss in the quarterfinals last year, the Saints are motivated to make a strong comeback this season.

Coach Matt Foxhoven emphasized that the team has put last year behind them and is focused on the present. With a lineup that includes five new girls from last year, the Saints have shown resilience and determination throughout the season.

Xavier will kick off the regional team competition on Friday with a quarterfinal match against Maquoketa. A win would propel them to a semifinal match later in the day against the winner of Nevada and Davenport Assumption. The regional final is scheduled for next Tuesday at Xavier, with the state quarterfinals set for May 18 at a location to be determined.

The team’s success can be attributed to their experience and teamwork, with freshman Gabi Fleming leading the way as the top singles player and senior Avery Link providing strong support as the No. 2 player. Link expressed confidence in the team’s ability to work together towards their common goal of winning a state title.

Coach Foxhoven praised the team’s mental toughness and fighting spirit, highlighting their willingness to battle through challenges on the court. With the postseason underway, the Saints are determined to showcase their capabilities and make a strong push for the championship title.
