Reading Time: < 1 minute

Flagstaff, AZ – The travel industry is a vital component of Northern Arizona’s economy, contributing significantly to the community’s prosperity. In celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week, Discover Flagstaff is hosting National Travel and Eco-Tourism Week from May 19-25, emphasizing the importance of responsible travel and ecotourism.

Ecotourism focuses on sustainable travel to natural areas, promoting environmental conservation and supporting local communities. Discover Flagstaff encourages visitors to explore Flagstaff, the Grand Canyon, Coconino National Forest, and other natural wonders while practicing responsible travel habits.

Last year, Discover Flagstaff introduced a digital Trails Passport to help visitors discover over 30 hiking and biking locations while reducing congestion at popular trailheads. Additionally, the Discover Flagstaff Pledge for the Wild program promotes responsible visitation and supports the local Flagstaff Trails Initiative.

As part of their commitment to the community, Discover Flagstaff is organizing a Service Day on May 22 to clean up areas along Route 66 in collaboration with the city’s Sustainability Department. Since 2018, Discover Flagstaff has collected 200 pounds of trash and recyclables during semiannual cleanups.

Visitors play a crucial role in supporting Flagstaff’s economy, with over 5 million visitors annually contributing to the city’s job market and generating $750 million in economic benefits. The Bed, Board, and Beverage tax, primarily paid by visitors, funds beautification projects, arts and sciences initiatives, and recreational facilities in the city.

Tourism not only enriches the local economy but also alleviates the tax burden on residents. On average, the travel industry saves every Arizona household $878 annually, with Flagstaff residents benefiting even more significantly. With tourism reducing the average annual household tax burden by about $1,330, the community has much to celebrate during National Travel and Eco-Tourism Week.
