Celebrating the 75th Anniversary of Plitvice Lakes National Park

The Plitvice Lakes National Park, a natural oasis that has been enchanting visitors for 75 years, is celebrating a double anniversary in 2024. Established in 1949 as the first national park in Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes were later added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979, marking 45 years of international recognition. The park’s unique lake system, comprising 16 named lakes and numerous smaller ones, cascades in a breathtaking display of nature’s wonders.

The Society for the Arrangement and Beautification of Plitvice Lakes, founded in 1893, played a crucial role in promoting and preserving this natural gem. Academic Ivo Pevalek, a passionate advocate for conservation, emphasized the need to protect the lakes, leading to their designation as a national park. Today, the park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognized for its tufa formation and distinct hydrogeological conditions.
