Reading Time: < 1 minute

Morgan State University’s 147th Spring Commencement Exercises showcased the transformative power of higher education, with more than 800 graduates receiving their diplomas this spring. Among the inspiring stories shared at the ceremonies were those of a young man from Ghana who became a successful businessperson and chancellor of a top-ranked university, a mother, educator, and pastor who earned her master’s degree alongside her father at age 80, and a Marine Corps veteran who overcame obstacles to earn his degree in Computer Science and is now headed to work for Google as a software engineer.

The ceremonies, held at Murphy Fine Arts Center and W.A.C. Hughes Memorial Stadium, celebrated the achievements of the graduates, including 219 Latin Honors recipients. Vice President Kamala Harris sent a congratulatory message to the graduates, highlighting the importance of attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities like Morgan State.

Keynote speaker Sir Samuel Esson Jonah shared his inspiring journey from a small mining town in Ghana to becoming a successful business leader and advocate for education. He emphasized the importance of empowering others through education and community service.

Academic excellence was also recognized at the ceremonies, with students like Don-Terry Veal Jr. and Iyana Gross receiving accolades for their achievements. The graduates of Morgan’s ROTC Bear Battalion were honored for their commissioning as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army, continuing the university’s tradition of service in the military.

President David K. Wilson and Vice President Harris encouraged the graduates to continue striving for excellence and making a positive impact on the world. The ceremonies concluded with a message of empowerment and pride, as the graduates prepared to embark on their next chapter with Morgan Pride and enthusiasm.
