Celebrities Gather at Adesina Ọbafẹmi Awolowo Prize Ceremony in Lagos

Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, President of the African Development Bank (AfDB), was honored with the prestigious 2023 Obafemi Awolowo Prize for Leadership during a star-studded ceremony in Lagos on the 6th of March. The event was attended by a distinguished guest list that included prominent figures from Nigerian society and international heads of state.

Among the foreign leaders present were Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu-Hassan, Azali Assoumani, President of the Republic of the Union of Comoros, Sahle-Work Zewde, President of Ethiopia, and Prime Minister Victoire Dogbe representing Faure Gnassingbe, President of Togo. The event was chaired by President Samia Suluhu-Hassan, who praised Adesina as “Africa’s optimist in chief” and a “gallant son of Nigeria.”

Adesina’s remarkable achievements as Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and as the President of the AfDB were highlighted during the ceremony. His innovative policies and initiatives led to significant private sector investments in agriculture, transforming the sector and increasing food production in Nigeria.

Former President of Nigeria, Gen Yakubu Gowon, commended Adesina for his hard work and dedication, describing him as the best of Nigeria. The President of the Union of Comoros, Azali Assoumani, praised Adesina for his ability to build partnerships and implement programs that positively impact millions of people across Africa.

In his acceptance speech, Adesina emphasized the need for transformative leadership in Africa to end poverty and create prosperity for all. He called for policies that prioritize the welfare of the people and promote wealth creation through public-centric and private sector initiatives.

The award ceremony not only celebrated Adesina’s achievements but also highlighted the legacy of Chief Obafemi Awolowo, in whose honor the prize was instituted. Adesina’s commitment to public service and advocacy for the pan-African cause align with the values and vision of Chief Awolowo, making him a deserving recipient of the prestigious award.
