In a nail-biting softball game between Central Mountain and DuBois, it was a critical play in the bottom of the sixth inning that ultimately sealed the deal for the Wildcats. With the score tied at 11 apiece and runners on second and third base, Central Mountain freshman pitcher and junior catcher Katelyn Bowman had one last chance to make a play to get out of the jam.
As Dubois pitcher Ava Boronick attempted to steal home, Bowman quickly located the ball that had gotten past her and fired it over to make a tag just in time for the third out. This crucial play not only got the Wildcats out of a potential one-run deficit but also sparked a two-run top of the seventh inning to put Central Mountain ahead.
Despite a 75-minute rain delay and a strong hitting performance from both teams, it was Central Mountain’s defense that ultimately sealed the deal. Coach Fred Caldwell praised his team’s defensive prowess, highlighting the key plays made by players like Bowman and Weaver.
In the end, Central Mountain emerged victorious with a 13-11 win, thanks in large part to Bowman’s standout performance at the plate, including two home runs. With this win, the Wildcats secured their third consecutive subregional title and a trip to the PIAA State Tournament.
As the Wildcats look ahead to the state tournament, they know they have a tough road ahead but are confident in their abilities to compete at a high level. With a strong combination of veteran leadership and young talent, Central Mountain is poised for success as they continue their postseason journey.
