Chad announces military leader, Deby Itno, as victor of controversial election

Chad’s military leader, Mahamat Deby Itno, has been declared the winner of the presidential election, sparking controversy and unrest in the country. The provisional results released on Thursday by the national election agency showed Deby Itno securing over 61 per cent of the vote, while his main rival, Prime Minister Succès Masra, trailed far behind with just over 18.5 per cent.

The announcement of Deby Itno’s victory led to gunfire in the capital, although it remains unclear whether the shots were fired in celebration or protest. The election, which was held after three years of military rule, was widely expected to be won by the incumbent leader, who took power after his father’s death in 2021.
