Chad: First Round of Presidential Elections Concluded

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The first round of presidential elections in Chad concluded yesterday, marking a significant moment in the country’s political landscape. Following the death of President Idriss Déby Itno, who was killed by rebels in April 2021, his son, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno, assumed the role of interim president. The election was intended to transition from the provisional regime to a democratically elected leader.

One of the key contenders in the election is Prime Minister Succès Masra, a former opposition figure who has aligned with the current regime. Despite calls for a boycott from the opposition, the Archbishop of N’Djamena urged Chadians to participate in the electoral process and exercise their civic duty responsibly.

The Archbishop emphasized the importance of free and transparent elections, urging citizens to express their opinions through the ballot box. He called on Catholic believers to act as free citizens amidst any moral pressure, threats, or corruption. Additionally, he called for prayers for the candidates to demonstrate patriotism and work towards peace in the country.

The election results are expected to be announced on May 21st, with a potential runoff election on June 22nd if no candidate secures the necessary quorum in the first round. The outcome of the election will shape the future of Chad and its leadership, amidst a backdrop of political tensions and challenges following the death of a prominent opposition figure earlier this year.
