Westfield Wolverines Win Section VI Class C Softball Championship

ALLEGANY — Despite the absence of three-time Player of the Year Haleigh Dellow, the Westfield Wolverines proved they were still a force to be reckoned with as they clinched the Section VI Class C softball championship on Tuesday evening.

Junior right-hander Eva Gnadzinski led the Wolverines to victory with a stellar performance on the mound, allowing just one hit and striking out seven batters in a 3-0 shutout against Chautauqua Lake. The game remained scoreless until the seventh inning when Westfield broke the deadlock with three runs to secure the win.

Head coach Shawn Gnadzinski commended his team for rising to the occasion despite the doubts surrounding their ability to perform at a higher level in Class C. With the victory, the Wolverines advanced to the Far West Regional where they will face off against Section V’s champion.

The game was a pitching duel between Gnadzinski and Chautauqua Lake’s Cayzlee Johnson, with both hurlers delivering strong performances. However, defensive errors in the seventh inning cost the Eagles the game, allowing Westfield to capitalize and take the lead.

The Wolverines’ resilience and determination were evident throughout the game, with players like Brynn Ernewein and Arielle Corbett stepping up in crucial moments to secure the victory. Gnadzinski’s pitching prowess and the team’s solid defense ultimately proved to be the difference in a tightly contested matchup.

As Westfield celebrates their Section VI Class C championship win, they now set their sights on the next challenge in the postseason, eager to continue their winning streak and make a strong statement in the upcoming regional competition.
