Chanel Contos: Normalizing Conversations about Consent

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Relationship expert Chanel Contos has made a groundbreaking revelation about online dating, debunking a common myth that has been hindering modern relationships. After three years of advocating for the importance of consent, Contos is determined to break the stigma surrounding conversations about consent.

In a recent statement, Contos emphasized the need to normalize discussions about consent, stating, “We need to break the myth that talking about consent is awkward.” She believes that this misconception is a major barrier to fostering healthy and respectful relationships. According to Contos, checking in with a potential partner on Tinder or any other dating platform can be reassuring and appreciated, rather than rigid or uncomfortable.

As part of her mission to promote consent education, Contos has collaborated with Tinder to introduce eight new terms in its Dating Dictionary, including coercive control, healthy sexual relationships, sexual harm, and victim-survivor. This initiative aims to provide users with the language to discuss important topics related to consent and relationships.

Contos is also set to lead a new chapter of Tinder’s online date guide, School of Swipe: Consent Edition, which is scheduled to launch in September. She believes that having the right vocabulary is crucial for engaging in respectful conversations about consent and addressing issues such as rejection.

The timing of Tinder’s education campaign is significant, as dating apps have come under scrutiny from the Albanese government for their handling of consent and safety. The government has called on dating apps to implement a code of conduct by mid-2024 or face potential legislation.

Tinder’s Australia-based communications director, Kirsty Dunn, emphasized the company’s commitment to ensuring safe and consensual interactions on the app. By working with Contos and incorporating the government’s Consent Policy Framework into its Dating Dictionary, Tinder aims to provide users with the tools to communicate clearly and build healthy relationships.

Overall, Contos and Tinder’s collaboration represents a step forward in promoting consent education and fostering a culture of respect and safety in online dating. By challenging myths and providing users with the language to discuss important issues, they are paving the way for more meaningful and consensual relationships in the digital age.
