Charity Helicopter in British Columbia Provides Healthcare to Remote Regions

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Helicopters Without Borders (HWB) is making a big impact in remote communities in British Columbia by bringing essential healthcare services via helicopter. Recently, a team from HWB embarked on a mission to Xa’xtsa or Douglas First Nation, showcasing their dedication to providing care where it is needed most.

The journey to Xa’xtsa was not without its challenges, as the team faced nasty weather and an hours-long delay before finally landing in the small village of Tipella. Despite the power being out all day, the team quickly set up a mobile dental clinic, complete with a generator, to provide much-needed dental care to the community.

For residents of Tipella, accessing healthcare services can be a daunting task, with a five-hour round trip by logging road to the nearest city. Many in the community cannot afford the time or expense of making the journey, making the services provided by HWB invaluable.

One of the patients seen by the HWB team was 11-year-old Zoe, whose mother Vanessa shared that Zoe had previously had negative experiences with the dentist outside of their community. However, thanks to the care and compassion shown by the HWB team, Zoe was able to relax and receive the treatment she needed without the added stress of travel.

Helicopters Without Borders was founded in 2020 by pilot Owen McClung-Sitnam, with the goal of bridging the gap between aviation and non-profit work. Since its inception, HWB has delivered essential supplies and healthcare services to multiple communities, with a focus on providing care to those in remote areas.

Looking ahead, HWB aims to expand its services and partnerships to reach more communities in need. The team in Tipella saw 15 patients during their visit and plans to return in three months to continue building relationships with patients and providing ongoing care.

Overall, Helicopters Without Borders is making a significant impact on remote communities in British Columbia, ensuring that everyone has access to essential healthcare services, regardless of their geographic location.
