Illinois Schools Shine in National Ranking of Best High Schools for 2024
Several Illinois schools have made their mark in the latest ranking of the country’s best high schools for 2024. According to the U.S. News and World Report, more than 24,000 public high schools across all 50 states were reviewed for the “2024 Best High School Rankings.”
The ranking criteria included factors such as college readiness, state assessments, graduation rate, college curriculum breadth, and underserved student performance. The top 20 schools on the list either had selective enrollment or specific requirements like a minimum GPA.
Leading the pack was BASIS Charter Schools in Peoria, Arizona, claiming the No. 1 spot, followed by Signature School in Evansville, Indiana at No. 2. In Illinois, five Chicago schools made it to the top 100 nationwide, with Walter Payton College Preparatory High School securing the No. 5 spot.
While suburban schools in Illinois didn’t rank as high nationally, they excelled in the state rankings. Schools like Adlai E. Stevenson High School, Vernon Hills High School, New Trier Township High School, and Hinsdale Central High School were among the best in the state.
The top 10 high schools in the nation included schools from Arizona, Indiana, Washington, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Texas, South Carolina, Michigan, Georgia, and California. In Illinois, the top 10 schools featured Walter Payton College Preparatory High School, Northside College Preparatory High School, Young Magnet High School, Jones College Prep High School, Lane Technical High School, and others.
