China and Pakistan pledge to safeguard CPEC from critics and opponents | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The recurring attacks on Chinese personnel working on the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) projects by militant groups in Pakistan have raised concerns for China. In response to these threats, Pakistan and China have pledged to safeguard the CPEC from detractors and adversaries.

During a meeting between Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese counterpart Li Qiang, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to protect the CPEC and enhance cooperation on the multi-billion dollar project. They discussed the importance of Gwadar as a key pillar of the CPEC and agreed to expedite infrastructure projects to transform the region into a regional economic hub.

Sharif assured Beijing of providing complete security to Chinese personnel and projects in Pakistan, emphasizing the importance of Chinese investment and financial support for Pakistan’s struggling economy. The CPEC, a flagship project of China’s Belt and Road Initiative, aims to connect Gwadar Port in Pakistan with China’s Xinjiang province.

However, the implementation of various CPEC projects has slowed in recent months, partly due to security concerns. In March, a terrorist attack on the Dasu Hydropower Project resulted in the deaths of five Chinese and one Pakistani nationals.

Despite these challenges, both countries remain committed to deepening cooperation in various sectors, including transport infrastructure, industry, energy, agriculture, and more. They also agreed to maintain high-level exchanges and consult closely on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

The signing of 23 MoUs and agreements further solidifies the partnership between Pakistan and China, highlighting their shared commitment to the development and success of the CPEC.
