China reveals ambitious three-year strategy to lead in AI and computing standards – Computerworld

Reading Time: < 1 minute

China has launched an ambitious three-year plan to establish itself as a global leader in AI and computing standards, setting the stage for a fierce tech race with the US and other nations. The initiative, known as the “Action Plan for Information Standard Construction (2024-2027),” is a comprehensive strategy aimed at strengthening China’s position in the rapidly evolving tech landscape.

Led by China’s Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, and the State Administration for Market Regulation, the plan focuses on advancing research and developing standards for cutting-edge technologies such as advanced chips, computing infrastructure, quantum applications, brain-computer interfaces, and AI.

The plan emphasizes the importance of information technology standards in driving high-quality development and technological innovation. By 2027, China aims to enhance its information technology standard system, release high-quality standards, and significantly improve the implementation and impact of these standards on economic and social development.

AI plays a central role in this mission, with a focus on developing standards for large AI models, generative AI, blockchain, cloud computing, quantum technologies, brain-computer interfaces, and more. The plan aims to address gaps in applying standards across government agencies and promote technological integration.

China’s push for high-tech self-reliance comes amidst economic challenges and US sanctions on key technologies. The country’s efforts to establish itself as a global leader in technology standards signal its determination to compete for technological dominance on the world stage.
