China to implement restrictions on exports of aviation and aerospace equipment | WGN Radio 720

Reading Time: < 1 minute

China’s Commerce Ministry announced on Thursday that it will impose restrictions on the exports of aviation and aerospace-related equipment and technology starting July 1. The move is aimed at safeguarding national security and interests, as well as fulfilling international obligations related to non-proliferation.

The new rules will require export licenses for items designated under the restrictions, which include aircraft and aerospace engines, structural parts, engine manufacturing equipment, software, and technology. Additionally, tools, molds, fixtures, and processing equipment used in the production of materials like titanium and aluminum alloys will also be subject to the controls.

The announcement, made in conjunction with China’s General Administration of Customs and the Central Military Commission’s equipment development department, comes amid escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington over trade and national security issues. Both countries have implemented measures to limit the export of products deemed critical to their respective defense industries.

The impact of China’s export restrictions on the aviation and aerospace sectors remains uncertain. While China has made strides in developing its own jet engines and aircraft components, it still relies on foreign suppliers for key parts. The move is seen as a response to recent U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, a move that Beijing considers a violation of its territorial claims.

The new controls will also cover technologies used in the design, manufacturing, and operation of the restricted equipment, including design drawings, process specifications, and simulation data. The full implications of China’s export restrictions on the global aerospace industry are yet to be seen.
