China Utilizes AI Technology to Combat Cheating in Important University Entrance Exam

Reading Time: < 1 minute

China is making significant strides in upholding exam integrity by implementing artificial intelligence technology in its most critical academic exam, the gaokao. This move comes as a proactive measure to ensure fairness and deter misconduct during this highly competitive university entrance examination.

In Guangdong province, real-time AI monitoring was deployed across 386 examination sites for the first time in history. The AI system analyzes image and video data within the examination halls to promptly detect abnormal behaviors like cheating or copying, sending alerts for immediate action by proctors.

Hainan and Chongqing are also exploring the use of AI for exam supervision, running pilot programs to catch and warn against disciplinary violations during the gaokao. Beijing has upgraded its smart surveillance system with enhanced image recognition capabilities to detect potential infractions swiftly.

While futuristic technology like radar, patrolling robots, and drones are increasingly being deployed to support candidates during the exam, human vigilance remains crucial. Analysts emphasize that while AI cannot fully replace human oversight, it plays a vital role in maintaining exam integrity and easing supervisors’ burdens.

With continuous advancements in AI, further technological innovations are expected to reduce and potentially eliminate cheating in future academic assessments. The use of AI in exams raises concerns about privacy and accuracy but offers advantages in efficiency, deterrence, and support for proctors. As China leads the way in leveraging AI for exam integrity, other countries may follow suit in adopting similar technologies.
