China Supports Iran’s Response to Embassy Attack, Calls for Restraint in Middle East

In the wake of an attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria and its subsequent retaliatory strike, China has expressed its belief that Iran can “handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil” while safeguarding its sovereignty and dignity.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed this message to his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian during a phone call on Monday. Wang commended Iran for emphasizing the importance of not targeting regional and neighboring countries in its actions.

Furthermore, Wang strongly condemned the embassy attack and described it as “unacceptable.” He noted that Iran had described its retaliatory actions as limited and carried out in self-defense.

Amir-Abdollahian assured Wang that Iran is aware of the regional tensions and is willing to exercise restraint, with no intention of further escalation.

The situation in the Middle East remains tense, with Israel vowing a response to Iran’s attack and several countries calling for restraint. Following the missile attack on Saturday night, numerous countries have summoned Iranian ambassadors.

In an effort to prevent further escalation in the region, Wang also spoke with Saudi Arabia’s foreign minister and expressed China’s willingness to work with Riyadh towards that goal.

Saudi Arabia has expressed its expectation for China to play an active role in promoting an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The country also expressed full trust in China and a willingness to enhance bilateral cooperation for sustainable development.

As tensions continue to simmer in the Middle East, diplomatic efforts are underway to prevent further escalation and promote peace in the region.
