China’s Push for AI Academies to Sustain Tech Talent Supply in Tech Competition

China is gearing up to establish independent AI academies in Shanghai and Beijing, with plans to expand across various provinces, as reported by the South China Morning Post. The move is aimed at nurturing the talent required to propel the artificial intelligence industry forward.

Zhu Songchun, an esteemed member of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) and head of the School of Intelligence Science and Technology at Peking University, revealed that the Ministry of Education will oversee these academies. The goal is to push for more institutes in different provinces to bolster the nation’s technological innovation.

Advocating for a more globally inclusive approach, Zhu emphasized the importance of Chinese academic institutions collaborating internationally. He stressed the need to attract talent from around the world to invigorate the academic landscape.

Speaking at a CPPCC assembly, Zhu highlighted the significance of revitalizing the academic community and attracting international talents. He underscored that artificial intelligence is at the forefront of global technological competition and presents both challenges and opportunities for China.

While the timeline for establishing these AI academies remains unspecified, Zhu suggested ensuring equitable treatment for foreign AI experts and students seeking opportunities in China. He also proposed leveraging private foundations to attract global talent in the AI domain.

China’s vice-minister of science and technology, Long Teng, affirmed the nation’s commitment to promoting international talent exchanges, particularly in AI. This initiative comes as Beijing intensifies efforts in artificial intelligence to build a high-quality tech force and revitalize its economy amidst escalating competition with the United States.
