Chinese Military Activity Reported in Taiwan Following Blinken’s Departure from Beijing | Global News

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Taiwan reported heightened Chinese military activity near the island on Saturday, with 12 aircraft crossing the sensitive median line of the Taiwan Strait. This provocative move came just a day after U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken concluded his visit to China.

The United States, Taiwan’s key ally and arms supplier, emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region during Blinken’s visit. However, China’s increased military pressure on Taiwan continues to escalate tensions.

Taiwan’s defence ministry detected a total of 22 Chinese military aircraft on Saturday, including Su-30 fighters, with 12 crossing the median line towards Taiwan’s north and center. This line, once respected as an unofficial border, is now regularly breached by China’s air force, which claims it does not recognize its existence.

Despite Taiwan’s well-equipped armed forces, they are significantly outnumbered by China’s military might, especially in the navy and air force. Taiwan’s response to Chinese missions is swift and appropriate, as seen in this recent incident.

The incoming Taiwan President-elect, Lai Ching-te, who assumes office on May 20, has called for dialogue with China. However, Beijing views him as a separatist threat and has rejected his overtures for talks.

As tensions between China and Taiwan continue to simmer, the international community closely watches the developments in the region, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the longstanding dispute.
