American athlete groups are calling for a “truly independent” investigation into the case of 23 Chinese swimmers who tested positive for a banned heart medication but were not sanctioned. The USA Swimming Athletes’ Advisory Council and the Team USA Athletes’ Commission sent a letter to the country’s drug czar, Rahul Gupta, urging for transparency and accountability in the handling of the doping case.

Gupta, who sits on the World Anti-Doping Agency’s executive committee, is expected to participate in a special meeting with other government officials to discuss the matter. The athletes expressed their disappointment in WADA’s handling of the situation, stating that the organization’s failure to follow its own rules has shattered their trust in the anti-doping system.

WADA has defended its actions, claiming that Chinese anti-doping authorities deemed the swimmers’ samples contaminated and that there was no way to appeal the ruling. However, critics argue that WADA’s response has been inadequate and have called for a more thorough investigation into the matter.

The appointment of Swiss prosecutor Eric Cottier to review the case has also come under scrutiny, with concerns raised about the limited scope of the investigation. Athletes, including outspoken advocate Lilly King, are worried about the fairness of competition as the Olympic and Paralympic games approach.

As the controversy continues to unfold, athletes are demanding answers and assurances that the playing field will be level for all competitors. The outcome of the investigation could have far-reaching implications for the future of anti-doping efforts in sports.
