Chinese tourists are once again exploring Malaysia, Singapore, Japan, and Indonesia, bringing benefits to these countries.

Chinese tourists are making a strong comeback as they head overseas for the extended May Labour Day holiday, nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels and boosting the global travel market. According to ForwardKeys, outbound trips between April 27 to May 5 are just 7 per cent below 2019 levels, with domestic ticketing surpassing 2019 levels by 4 per cent.

A last-minute surge in bookings has exceeded expectations, indicating a faster recovery than anticipated. Bloomberg Intelligence’s senior industry analyst, Tim Bacchus, stated that China’s outbound travel is recovering faster than expected, with international air travel expected to reach 90 per cent of 2019 levels by year-end.

Destinations in Asia, such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Indonesia, are expected to benefit greatly from the influx of Chinese tourists. Additionally, Europe is a popular choice for Chinese travelers during the holiday, with bookings for Italy and the UK seeing significant gains.

Despite concerns about China’s sluggish economy impacting consumer confidence, the return of Chinese travelers is crucial for the global travel industry, as they spent nearly US$248 billion on trips abroad in 2019. With domestic travel also booming, China’s tourism industry is showing promising signs of recovery.

Overall, the resurgence of international travel from China, coupled with strong demand for domestic travel, paints a positive picture for the industry. However, challenges remain, such as the lack of foreign passengers entering China due to strained relations with the US and limited return of European holidaymakers.
